Kayla Shavers: Unfit Mother...or Hogzilla Hunter?

The great wild hog menace sweeping across America is well-documented by now.  So can we blame Florida's Kayla Marie Shavers for leaving her nine-year-old and eight-month-old children in the car to go hunt possible candidates for Hogzilla III?  True to form, the hogs had been ransacking her property, and Kayla was fed up. It was just under 40 degrees outside, and Shavers's older child, who didn't appreciate being left in the cold car, called the police in to rescue him.  The hog-hunting mom was arrested for child neglect, and presumably, the menacing feral pigs escaped once again.

Kayla Shavers dispute the charges and claims she left the little complainer the keys to start the car if he needed to warm up.  But is the issue really whether this kid should be a little bit tougher, or is the issue that she left a nine-year-old in charge of a baby and a car? Clearly, Shavers thinks this is the kind of thing you have to do to nab a wild boar.

Wild Boar Update!

We already know freakishly large feral pigs are taking over large swaths of Texas, Georgia, and Alabama, but now it looks like the oinking menace is moving west.  The Silicon Valley city of San Jose, California, has declared open season on wild boars roaming around ritzy neighborhoods; the wild hogs are scaring the country club crowd and damaging golf course fairways. San Jose is not going to stand for that.

Officials have given hunters three months to shoot or hog-tie as many of the marauding swine as they can. Oddly, city councilman Johnny Khamis tempered the announcement by saying, "It's not my intention to go out and commit a pig genocide." Genocide?  Has Khamis seen the stats on Hogzillas I and II?  When it comes to the wild hog menace, you have to stand your ground!

Today's Wackadoodle - Hogzilla

Dallas, Texas has a problem with feral pigs.  The exploding population roams the metro area digging holes, breaking things, and generally reminding residents of the song "Hakuna Matata" from The Lion King.  The marauding swine have caused so many problems that the city has hired trapper Osvaldo Rojas and given him three years to turn the vandals into delicious bacon.

This story brings to mind the 2004 news sensation HOGZILLA, an enormous wild boar and domestic pig lovechild who measured between seven and nine feet and weighed 800 pounds.  When Hogzilla originally came on the scene, he was considered by many to be a hoax.  However, scientists in 2005 confirmed that Hogzilla was a real, very large creature.  Then in 2007, an eleven-year-old Alabama boy claimed to have killed Hogzilla II, a feral pig weighing over 1,000 pounds, after shooting it eight times with a pistol.

There are approximately three million feral pigs in Texas today.  With the high number of hogs Osvaldo Rojas will be trapping, I'd say he has a good chance of finding Hogzilla III.
